Matanza ‘07
The Gutierrez Hubbell House after 140 years finally went through a rehabilitation that was historically authentic. The Hubbell House Alliance sponsored an old fashion Matanza on Sunday, September 30 2007 to mark this special fundraising event. The Matanza was a huge success with the community coming out to support and view the house and the surrounding acreage. Over 600 people were in attendance and had the opportunity to partake of the lamb and pork that was cooked underground by Chef Albert Chavez and his assistants Clarence Rodgers, Art De La Cruz, Lawrence Lane & Jimmie Candelaria. Frances Ray and Irene Kersting stood by to lend support and offer coffee as the lamb and pork were put underground starting with the burning of the fire at 5:00 AM Saturday morning and the meat cooking until Sunday morning at 11:00 AM. The meat was supplemented with delicious red and green chile, beans, rice, corn tortillas and flour tortillas graciously donated by Ted Garcia from La Hacienda Restaurant. Entertainment continued throughout the day starting from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Hector Pimentel played his wonderful guitar music in the sala of the house, as the public toured the house and Docents Mary Frances Sanchez, Becky Candelaria, Arlette Hill, Laura Torres, Ceil Genero, and Marion Isidoro stood by giving information about |

The night before, the fire is built that will soon be reduced to red hot coals to cook the meat. |

The coals and meat are buried, ensuring no smoke or heat is escaping through the dirt. |

the house. Joseph Anthony Wasson was outside near the portal and was a great DJ playing music and making important announcements as day the went on. In the orchard Holy Water and Whiskey - a bluegrass and gospel band played awesome music. The day was perfect and so fitting for this great event. Hubbell House Alliance wishes to thank everyone who attended and had the opportunity to see the Gutierrez Hubbell House and enjoyed a great afternoon. |
