surrounded by a hay bale amphitheater. Parking signs were up, the south field ready for cars, flags along the Isleta Boulevard roadside. Everything was ready, the nature trail and grounds were groomed, the house looked grand! Enthusiasm was high. Worry too. We were having a party, would any one actually come? Yes they did! Over 700 people joined us for the Matanza on September 30. It was worth every once of effort! Offers of support came with most attendees. of what life was like, visiting the mercantile, riding the old buggy and interactions in the South Valley were abundant! It was a grand event for the South Valley and we will have many more!

The Matanza marks a major turning point for the Hubbell House Alliance. We now move from a planning group to an action group. We have the house to furnish, museum to create, library and oral history programs beginning, offices to set up, community outreach and educational programs to implement. To support all this activity we have docents to gather and train, grants to write, speakers bureau to begin. We plan a GRAND opening in the Spring. The county will lay the groundwork for the last two sections of the nature trail by moving the dirt piles on the south side of the house. The Casita will be rehabilitated and ready for use in the Spring. A few of these things are already underway. Marion Isidoro has agreed to see that an horno is built on the grounds and the educational program surrounding it implemented. Marion and Carol Chapman
